Wellness Policy 


The Menoken School District is committed to providing school environment that establish and protect children's health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting health and eating and physical activity.

1. A comprehensive learning environment for developing and practicing lifelong wellness behaviors.
    - The entire school environment, not just the classroom, shall be aligned with health school goals to positively influence a student's understanding beliefs, and habits as they relate to good nutrition and regular physical activity.
   - Every student in grades K-8 shall participate in at least 90 minutes of physical education class per week.
- All elementary school students will have at least 20 minutes per day of supervised recess, preferably outdoors.
- A healthy school environment should not be dependent on revenue from high-fat high-sugar, low nutrient foods to support school programs.
- School personnel are encouraged to practice consistency of nutrition messages throughout the curriculum and school environment ( ex. in learning activities, classroom snacks, etc.)
- School personnel are encouraged to be good role models.

2. Proper dietary habits contributing to students' health status and academic performance.
- Emphasis should be placed on foods that are nutrient dense per calorie, whether they are served or sold.
- Foods should be served with consideration toward variety, appeal, taste, safety, and packaging to ensure high quality meals/snacks.
-Healthy food alternatives should be offered at all school functions.

3. A sequential program of nutrition instruction that is integrated within the comprehensive school health education curriculum and coordinated with the food service program
- The nutrition classes should be taught by well-qualified and well-supported staff. The class should be aimed at influencing students' eating habits ( behaviors) as well as their knowledge and attitudes. Covered in health class.

4. A food service program that employs well-qualified staff who efficiently serve appealing choices of nutritious food that comply with or exceed federal and state standards.

5. Marketing of healthy eating
- Promote healthy eating to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community
- Give students positive, motivation messages about healthy eating and physical activity throughout the school setting. 
- Promote healthy reward programs

6. Fundraising
- All food fundraising on campus, for sale or consumption within the instructional day, will not be consumed within the school day.

7. Monitoring
- The superintendent or designee of the Menoken Public School District will ensure compliance with the abive established policies. In each school, the principle designee will ensure compliance with these policies in his/her school and will report on the school's compliance to the school district superintendent. Members of the Wellness Policy Committee will assist the principals, superintendent, and designees in this review.
-The school food service staff, at the school or district level, will ensure compliance with nutrition policies within school food service areas and will report to the superintendent and principals for review. Every three years, a comprehensive policy review will be completed by the Wellness Policy Committee Members( see below) and reported to the Board, school administration, and school health services personnel.

8. Policy Review
- Assessments of the implementations and effectiveness of each component of the wellness policy will be repeated formally every three years ( at a minimum) to help review policy compliance, assess progress, and determine areas in need of improvement.
